Life in rose-colored glasses (and without internet): this is Barbie's "2000s" mobile phone

Barbie , the film dedicated to the greatest glory of Mattel's famous doll, was indisputably the box office hit of the year in 2023. Twelve months later, when the echoes of Greta Gerwig's successful film are still resonating, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer HMD has decided to take advantage of the "hype" that continues to flutter around Barbie by launching a mobile phone that fans of the doll will probably love (even if apps like Instagram or TikTok are conspicuous by their absence).
Barbie's flip phone, which was announced a few months ago and is now on sale for 129.99 euros , aims to facilitate digital disconnection in an era in which we are permanently at the mercy of the stimuli that pour out of our smartphones. Under the mantra of "less is more", Barbie's new flip phone, which is of course a striking pink colour, wants to take us back to that time when mobile phones were not yet smart and were blissfully unaffected by the addictive content hosted on the Internet.
Aside from its modern USB-C port, everything about HMD's Barbie phone is reminiscent of phones from the 2000s . Its displays, both the inner (2.8 inches) and outer (1.7 inches), are tiny compared to the screens on today's smartphones.
The rear camera of the phone also has a 2000s feel , with just 0.3 megapixels and an internal memory of just 128 MB (which can, however, be expanded with a microSD card).

On the other hand, and as a "dumbphone", Barbie's mobile phone is primarily designed to make calls and write text messages , but not through WhatsApp, rather than using the traditional SMS (those that today have been almost buried in oblivion).
The device, which is a clamshell phone (a very common model in the 2000s), does not house the Android operating system but rather a system developed ad hoc and named S30+ whose aesthetics are clearly inspired by Barbie.
Barbie's phone is conspicuous by its absence from extraordinarily popular apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok
While the phone's operating system looks appealing, it lacks commonly used apps like WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok . However, Barbie's phone allows you to listen to the radio and play a new version of the legendary game "Snake."
The device can also be used as an MP3 player , which could be potentially useful for those who still listen to music in this format and are not 100% dependent on platforms like Spotify, which is also not present on Barbie's mobile.
From a purely aesthetic point of view, the phone, which is undoubtedly very chic, will almost certainly satisfy Barbie fans , but not those who find it virtually impossible to live with a mobile phone without Internet access.
The phone also includes two cases and also stickers and charms that can be used by the user to personalize the device , whose battery has a lifespan of up to 9 hours, according to laboratory tests undertaken by HMD.
Sales figures for Barbie's new flip phone will confirm (or not) whether the boom sparked last year by the film about the famous Mattel doll is still alive and kicking.
Still, even though many find it absolutely inconceivable to live without the perpetually glued gaze of a smartphone, there is indeed a market for retro-inspired technology. The New York Times claimed last year that old digital cameras were a kind of fetish for Generation Z, and The Times recently reported that young people are once again embracing wired headphones. Speaking of which, Barbie fans will be pleased to know that HMD's phone is equipped with the classic headphone jack, which has been obsolete on most modern smartphones.
