Tech companies need to feed themselves with quality content to train their ever-voracious artificial intelligence (AI) systems, but such content is rather meager. All the more reason for OpenAI , the parent company of the famous ChatGPT, to just announce the forging of an agreement with News Corp , which publishes The Wall Street Journal , The New York Post , The Times and The Sunday Times , among other titles, to access its vast archive of content.
Neither party involved in the deal has disclosed financial terms, but under the partnership OpenAI will have access to current and archived content from all News Corp publications for several years .
A few weeks ago, the company led by Sam Altman also reached an agreement with the Financial Times to transfer its content to its AI systems in order to train them appropriately. And at the end of last year, OpenAI signed a similar agreement with the German publisher Axel Springer , owner of titles such as Bild , Die Welt , Business Insider and Politico .

Other media outlets, on the other hand, have adopted an approach that is the opposite of News Corp. Instead of allying themselves with OpenAI, they have confronted the powerful AI startup. This is the case of The belgium whatsapp list New York Times , which a few months ago decided to sue OpenAI and Microsoft for using its content without its consent to train their AI models.
“ Our partnership with News Corp is a proud moment for journalism and technology . We value News Corp’s history as a leader in breaking news coverage around the world immensely and are excited to improve our users’ access to their quality content,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
“Together we are laying the foundation for a future where AI deeply respects, improves and upholds the standards by which the best journalism is governed,” Altman emphasizes .
“We believe this landmark agreement will set new standards for truth, virtue and value in the digital age ,” said Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp. “We are delighted to have found principled partners in Sam Altman and his trusted and talented team, who fully understand the commercial relevance of journalism.”
News Corp is headed by Lachlan Murdoch as chairman. His father, Rupert Murdoch, is chairman emeritus of the company and stepped down from his presidency of News Corp and Fox News last year.
