Microsoft plays both sides and forges an agreement with Mistral AI, the European OpenAI

Its lucrative deal with OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has put Microsoft at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI). However, the Redmond company does not want to bet everything on one card in this area of activity and has just signed an agreement with the French startup Mistral AI , which could reduce Microsoft's current heavy dependence on OpenAI when it comes to providing chatbots and other generative AI products.
Mistral AI was born less than a year ago, but it already has the reputation of being an "innovative and pioneering" company in the AI industry and is at the forefront of building efficient and cost-effective artificial intelligence systems, as Microsoft stressed yesterday .
Neither the software giant nor Mistral AI have disclosed the financial terms of the deal , although Microsoft has specified that the alliance entails a small investment in the Paris-based startup. This suggests that Microsoft's investment in Mistral AI is considerably more discreet and modest than that which the company led by Satya Nadella has dedicated to OpenAI, into whose coffers it has poured several billion dollars .
Mistral AI just launched a public test version of its own chatbot, dubbed Le Chat, yesterday . Its debut attracted so much attention that it was temporarily unavailable for much of Monday, a company executive confirmed.
Mistral Large will soon be available on Microsoft Azure
Yesterday, the French company also raised the curtain on its new major language model, Mistral Large , which apparently plays in the same league as OpenAI's GPT-4, Anthropic's Claude 2 and Google's Gemini Pro and will soon be available on Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform.
This is not the first time that Mistral AI technology has found its way into a cloud computing provider. Before announcing its agreement with Microsoft, the French company had also announced collaborations with Amazon and Google.
When it launched in the spring of last year, Mistral AI managed to attract large sums of money from investors , giving the company a multi-billion dollar valuation just a few months after its founding.
The technology developed by Mistral AI is also open source , meaning the Fr cameroon whatsapp list ench startup makes key components of its artificial intelligence models public. This is in sharp contrast to the approach taken by companies such as OpenAI, which jealously guards the components of its AI models.
The foundations of OpenAI were laid by three researchers previously associated with Google and Meta : Arthur Mensch (CEO), Guillaume Lample (chief scientist) and Timothee Lacroix (chief technology officer).
When the European Union (EU) was drafting the final version of its Artificial Intelligence Law last fall , Mistral AI rebelled against Brussels’ attempt to impose restrictions on the foundational models that power generative AI systems . Arthur Mensch, CEO of the French startup, said at the time that EU regulation would clip the wings of innovation at companies based in the community bloc.
