On the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the World Wide Web, the father of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee, has sent an open letter in which he expresses his concerns about some issues in the digital world.
Among them, the advertising and political messages on the Internet that have been the talk of the town over the past year and much of this one.
«Online political advertising has quickly become a highly sophisticated industry. The fact that most people get their information from just a few platforms and the increasing sophistication of algorithms that are increasingly rich in personal data means that political campaigns are now built on an individual basis and targeted directly at users,» he says.
Berners-lee has expressed great concern about this issue , pointing out that we could be talking about up to 50,000 variations of ads served by Facebook every day during the American elections.
"There are indications that political ads namibia phone data are used unethically to direct users to fake news sites or to keep them away from polls. Targeted campaigns allow completely different, possibly conflicting things to be said to different groups. Is that democratic?" he asks.
But Berners-Lee also refers in her letter to the loss of control over user data and the ease with which misinformation can spread. She also notes that the current model of exchanging free content for personal data leads people to offer it without having carefully considered their decision.
He also has words for the growing control that governments exercise over citizens through the Internet and that violates the right to privacy. He also highlights the phenomenon of fake news and regrets that Facebook and Google algorithms are used to show people partial or false information.
“Through the use of data science and bots, those with bad intentions can use the system to spread false information for financial or political gain,” he added.
With this statement, the father of the Internet calls for transparency in the digital world, for the responsibility of the "gatekeepers" Google and Facebook, and for citizen awareness with the aim of making the network of networks a free and safe place.
