Podcasting technologies , RSS and Internet programs have been around for more than 15 years. But only in recent years have podcasts become especially popular around the world. What happened?

One of the most striking features of podcasts is their young audience. In Sweden and the United States, where podcasts are most popular, more than half of respondents under 35 listen to them monthly. But people over 55 account for less than a quarter of the audience.
Older listeners are twice as likely as younger listeners to listen to office 365 database radio. And this is hardly surprising: people under 35 are the smartphone generation, many of which now come pre-installed with special apps. In the UK, 55% of listening is done on a smartphone, and for audiences under 35 this figure rises to 62%.

Where do people listen to podcasts?
Most often, podcasts are listened to at home (64%), on public transport (24%) or in person (20%). About a fifth of respondents (18%) listen to podcasts when walking or going to the store, about the same (16%) turn them on during their workout. Another 16% find the time and opportunity to listen to podcasts at work. Younger people are more likely to listen to podcasts on the go, while people over 45 are more likely to play podcasts at home.
The average length of podcasts is 20 to 40 minutes. This length is partly related to the average time people travel from home to work. This is especially true in the news industry. For example, people listen to the Guardian news podcast Today in Focus during the morning rush hour. And the Washington Post publishes its news coverage at the end of the workday. According to the study, Americans are much more likely to listen to podcasts in the car, where they spend more time overall, while Europeans use public transport.
