The financial situation of households in real time and zooms on specific populations

In 2021, INSEE established a partnership with two banking networks, La Banque Postale and Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale, to monitor anonymized panels of bank accounts. These panels, each representing 300,000 customers, provide usable data almost in real time on the financial situation of customers. For INSEE, these data make it possible both to monitor economic developments with a very short time step (monthly or even daily) and to simultaneously measure household expenditure and resources. The large size of the panels also makes it possible to zoom in on very specific populations, qualifying the overall picture provided by the aggregates ( Angel , 2023). For both banking networks, this contribution to better economic information is part of the values ​​they carry. Very strict guarantees have been put gambling database in place to ensure the anonymization of the data and the security of the information systems on which this data was available.

The March 2021 Economic Outlook presented leading indicators on household consumption, savings, and financial situation, broken down by income level, age, and a rough measure of socio-professional category. It showed that the sharp slowdown in consumption had fueled a rise in gross financial assets, particularly for those with the highest incomes.
