Measuring the economic performance of farms

This is then assessed using accounting indicators that can be calculated either at the macroeconomic level for all French agricultural activity using national accounting, or at the microeconomic level for each farm using business accounting data, which also makes it possible to analyze the diversity of economic results between and within production sectors. These two approaches to "agricultural income" are implemented by INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Agriculture in the work published today, with the forecast macroeconomic results of the agricultural sector for 2024 and the microeconomic results of farms in 2023 .

A second, broader approach consists of evaluating all the income that farmers job seekers database can use to consume and save, this time reasoning not at the farm level, but at the level of the farmer's household. This more global approach to income also makes it possible to estimate the monetary poverty rate of farmers , by using socio-fiscal data matched with data from the agricultural census.

In this first approach, the farm is the basic unit: it is a business that keeps accounts, used to identify and precisely characterize all operations related to the management of the farm during a given period (for example a year).
