Hi Sitegrounders, here I am again to talk to you about a service that deserves to be in the spotlight: site migration. As a web hosting company, we are constantly moving thousands of websites in different ways. The most challenging migrations happen when data center locations change. On such occasions, we end up moving around 300 TB of data. Usually this happens via cable, but we have also physically moved our servers, literally transporting websites with trucks!
Another huge migration event is when we upgrade our infrastructure and move all our customers to a new platform (for example when we introduced the LXC infrastructure a couple of years ago). This upgrade happens periodically every 2/3 years, so that all our users' websites can always benefit from the most innovative solutions.
However, there is another type of migration that, although it may be less curious to talk about, is actually the most important for us. It is the transfer of hundreds of websites that we have been doing daily for 14 years, for luxembourg mobile database all new customers coming from other providers. We like to consider it a “welcome transfer” for those who decide to rely on SiteGround, and that is what I will talk about below.
A lot of practice makes perfect
The website migration service was obviously among the very first services of SiteGround and currently we receive more than 3000 migration requests every month. Over the years we have encountered all kinds of requests, faced all kinds of problems and accumulated so much experience in managing website migrations, that I can bet that hardly anyone can put our team in difficulty.
Having clients from dozens of different providers, we know all the pitfalls of moving from them to us and handle them with ease. For example, sometimes even a simple cPanel transfer can be complicated by providers that use specific file structures. Knowing these issues, we always manually check user accounts and fix everything in advance, so that the site can start running flawlessly on our infrastructure.
We then have a long list of important things to check for all the most popular applications when they are moved to a new server. For example, some of the providers that only host WordPress, make crucial changes to their users' wp-config.php files that, if not restored, could prevent the site from working on another platform. These include adding custom rules that do not allow operation in a new environment or inserting a closing php tag at the end of the file. Another thing we always check are the permissions on files and folders that, if not set correctly, lead to errors on the home page. Finally, the MySQL connection settings are also very important, so we check them very carefully, so that the site does not continue to try to use the previous MySQL server, after the transfer.
For more information we also have our tutorial dedicated to site transfer.

One procedure, many steps
The steps above are just a small part of what we do when a website is migrated. There are many other things that need to be done and checked: the provider we are migrating from, availability of cPanel backups, SSH or FTP access, whether the transferred site is WordPress or not, etc. To ensure that all customers receive the same level of service, we have created a unique process, followed by all our experts. The process also includes the activation of our amazing services such as Auto Update, SuperCacher, etc. And to add a touch of class, as part of the process, we scan every site we migrate for malware.
Well begun…
We want the best for the start of your SiteGround journey, so we’ve worked hard to make our “onboarding” process quick and hassle-free. Everything I’ve said about migration is just a summary of the many things we do for every new customer, but it’s essentially what leads
